Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and try to recall the color of your underwear, or socks. What color was the shirt you wore yesterday? Try to envision where you’re car is right now. Did you pull in to that parking spot or back in? Without looking at a clock or watch do you know within a 15 minute time frame – what time it is? Do you recall the last words you said to your spouse, significant other or child before you left the house this morning? I’m not trying to make you feel bad. I had to stop and think about these questions also. The point is true awareness is something that takes practice. I’ve been studying mental/emotional processes and I’ve been an Energy Healer and Spiritual Coach for over 10 years and I still struggle with awareness. The good news for all of us is, we function really well most of the time on auto-pilot. The bad news is, auto-pilot keeps us from noticing many of the truly magical occurrences going on around us 24/7. It also allows stress to build up mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually. Yes, you can be spiritually stressed. Fully aware is knowing yourself well and what you think, feel, want and need at all times. Stop right now, close your eyes again, take a few deep slow breaths. How do you feel? Are you warm or cold, excited, tired, do you have any physical pains? Were you “aware” of these sensations before I asked you to look for them? Becoming guru aware is too much for the average person to handle. Hey, I study these things for a living and guru awareness is too much for me. But gentle, self-love awareness is one of the best gifts we can teach ourselves. I invite all of you to try this exercise. For the next few days, stop as many times a day as you can remember, and just breathe. Look around you, notice little things, the way your child’s hair looks when the sun hits it, the sound of wind through the trees, if it’s snowing, walk outside, stand very still and just listen. The sound of snow falling is like nothing else. Become “aware” of how your body feels, look for cramps, aches, itches, fatigue. The sensation of your clothes against your skin. Savor the smell of your morning coffee brewing or the aroma from the bakery. Come back and leave comments about your experiences with “awareness.”
