Today’s post is about movies. Well, actually one specific movie; The Lone Ranger. As most of you know, I live in New Mexico. The Land of Enchantment. We have ski resorts, a piece of the Rio Grande, mountains, desserts, Native American Pueblos and movie studios.
We residents of New Mexico are always the first to know when a big name movie is being filmed here. We actually have several famous residents, (Val Kilmer, Julia Roberts, the late Patrick Swayze; just to name a few). Our local papers are on location as often as possible to keep us up to date. But to say we’re excited about this movie is an understatement. This is a blending of the old west meets Native American heritage. Thanks to Johnny Depp, Tonto will be portrayed as the intelligent, savvy, and reliable sidekick he truly is, while presenting authentic Native heritage. Here’s the link to the webpage where you can learn more about Mr. Depp’s feelings on his portrayal of Tonto.
The movie is due for release on May 31, 2013. Obviously, since the movie is only now being filmed I can’t give you a true review of the movie. However, given Mr. Depp’s feelings for Tonto and with Native Americans on site, consulting with cast and producers, I feel this movie will be a much more authentic portrayal of the Native Americans and their interactions with open minded whites. Here is the link for a list of the cast and more information on the behind the scenes activity.
And finally, here’s a picture published in one of our local papers. The woman standing beside Tonto (Johnny Depp) is the Surgeon General for the Navajo Nation, Dr. Gayle Dine ‘Chacon.
