December 21, 2012

Word of warning, this is a very direct post.  I’ve been very open and honest about my personal feelings as well as providing spiritual insight.

December 21, 2012, winter equinox, the Yule celebration, the darkest day of the year (less sunlight than any other day) and the end of the Mayan calendar.  Please notice I didn’t say anything about the end of the world.  Recently there has been more investigation, speculation, research, debate, and planning than perhaps even during the Y2K scare of 2000.  We humans tend to let even minor changes panic us.  The truth is the plethora of possible scenarios running rampant in imaginations all over the world are scarier than what will probably happen.  Our fears are almost always worse than actual reality.

We may have solar flares, polar shifts, or gravitational changes; however, I have no idea why these seem to be an issue, we have solar flares, polar shifts, gravitational changes, not to mention meteor showers, and obscure space junk falling all the time.  As the planets spin and rotate around the sun and the earth, there is a constant tug, push, dip, swerve, pull, press, wiggle, sway and movement caused by variations in gravitational force among the planets and the sun.  Our earth is part of this, no one knows exactly how long this has been going on nor does anyone know how much longer it will continue.  The earth survives and continues in her support of us through all these astronomical dances and except when there’s a big news flash or some social media brings it to our attention, we go about our daily lives oblivious to it all.

Most religions and spiritual principles foretell of an apocalypse, a day of reckoning, a moment in time when everything changes for human life as we know it.  When we get up everyday and go to work; are we not ‘working’ to change our life?  When we save, plan and build for the future; is it not for a different life than what we are currently living?  When we worship, pray, meditate, and practice spiritually are we not practicing for a hoped for spiritual awakening?   What if all the societal corrections we harass our governments for happen naturally due to planetary alignment and atmospheric alterations?  Would a change in spiritual consciousness; a new age of compassion, understanding and acceptance, really be so bad?   What if the planetary changes which ‘may’ occur on December 21, 2012, repair global warming and heal the earth?  What if some global disaster does happen, but when the dust settles you realize those people you thought were different from you, that you thought were savages or morally inept due to different spiritual practices, that you thought were not as good as you, or that you didn’t want living in your neighborhood, going to school with your children, or God forbid, running your country, what if it turns out those people are exactly like you?

But, what if, . . . nothing happens.  Our calendars end every twelve months.  What if it turns out that the Mayans were just keeping much longer, more complete calendars than what we have time, attention or selflessness to create?  And, by the way, for all the religious zealots, when did you begin assuming that just because the Mayans ended their calendar, this means your apocalypse, doomsday, or rapture is set to occur?  Are not these people some of the ones you’re always trying to save from themselves? Since when do you base your religious time frames on some other culture’s beliefs?  What if the point to this current end-of-the-world panic was to teach us to care, nurture and love the earth, the environment, the waters, the plants, the animals, and (dramatic pause, then gasp) other people; even the ones that appear different.  (I know most of you who read my posts regularly do not fit into this category).

What if . . . ?  You fill in the blank. I’d love to hear what each of you is fearing, hoping or even foreseeing?

Personal Image

While reading a post on a blog I follow , Love and Light Portal, I came across this, “you are Creation experiencing itself.”  After giving it some thought, it began to resonate with me more and more. The Christian Bible says we are created in God’s image. It doesn’t matter what your concept of “God”, “Great Spirit”, “Universal Consciousness” or any other form of Divinity is, the Supreme Being who created us, probably has very similar attributes; physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

So, doing what I do best, I begin to over-think this whole concept. On the one hand, the Creator being so much like us is very comforting. We all have very different opinions, ideas, perspectives and preferences. The idea our Creator is so much like us makes being human a little more tolerable. Just imagine, the Creator wakes up and says, “Today I think I want to be a 7 year old little girl and play dress-up pretending I’m a fairy with magical powers,” or maybe the Creator wants to be a 15 year old boy and play basketball with his friends, or maybe be a 36 year old house wife who needs a break and decides to watch Lifetime movies in front of a roaring fire all afternoon.

But then, I looked at it from the other perspective. If the Creator is so much like us, doesn’t that mean we are very much like the Creator? “We are Creation experiencing itself.”  How does this change our image of ourselves?  I think we owe it to the Creator to be more aware and appreciative; aware and appreciative of everything, all the time. For example, while preparing my thoughts for this post, I was drinking coffee (pinon coffee, my favorite) and in the middle of the cup, I took a drink and realized how wonderful this coffee is, its coffee but has a distinctive flavor due to the pinon nuts which are ground in with the coffee beans. If I’m Creation experiencing itself, then Creator tasted the same thing I tasted. Creator was enjoying the blend of coffee bean and pinon nut right along with me.  The flowers I so lovingly planted and now water and care for everyday. Creator is caring for and enjoying the flowers the same as I am. Smelling their fragrance, appreciating their wonderful colors and laughing right along with me when the Magpies dig for the bugs under the compost and the rabbits wander through checking for anything edible.

This should also give us pause as to how we treat other people. For they are also Creation experiencing itself. I know this isn’t always easy when the people in question are challenging to us. The plethora of reasons for these challenges are best left for another post. The point is, everything, rocks, dirt, flowers, trees, insects, animals, the very earth we live on and the galaxies beyond us, and of course the humans, are all Creation experiencing itself. A vast concept with endless possibilities.

Dinner Guest

If you could chose one person either living or dead to have dinner with, who would it be and why? Stop reading for a moment and really think about this. What is it about the person that rouses your interest? Where would you take them for dinner, or would you invite them to your home? What questions do you have for them? Are there things you want to tell them? Keep in mind, this can be anyone.

My first pick is Jesus. I would probably invite him to my home for dinner. Since he’s Jewish I would probably serve fish, rice and rolls, I figure this is a safe bet. Of course I would have a nice bottle of wine chilled. For dessert I would make a flaky apple cinnamon danish layered with nuts, ice cream on the side and fresh pinon coffee.

Why Jesus? He fascinates me, He always has, maybe always will. However, I don’t really have any deep Theological questions for him. I have the rest of Eternity to learn the deep and mystical. I want to get to know the man. I would ask what it was like to grow up in Israel 2000 years ago. Did he have any pets? What types of games did He and the other children play? Was there ever a time when He dated or was even interested in girls as more than friends? Does He have a favorite color, flower, food, drink, flavor? What does He think about the current politics of the world in general?Of course as the evening progresses I’m sure I’ll think of other questions.

The only deep question would be…Is there anything He really wants me to know (that I don’t already know or think I know).

Just some food for thought.

Have an Amazing Sunday!

Easter Is Not My Favorite Holiday

I’m prefacing today’s blog with a quick, note, this post has been difficult to write.

I’m not saying I dislike Easter, I don’t, it’s just not my favorite. Before I tell you why, let me reveal a little known fact, my degrees in Christian Counseling and Cross Cultural Communications were obtained from a Seminary. Yes, there was a time long ago, when I considered being a minister. I realized quickly I wouldn’t make a very good minister. But that is another story.

I feel we focus too much on Jesus’ death and don’t place adequate focus on his life and ministry.  I have studied many Christian Doctrines and Philosophies. I have studied Christianity from both a historical and an anthropological perspective. I’ve studied just the life, times and words of Jesus.

Based on all written accounts of the man both historically and spiritually He was never mean, abusive, hateful, or intimidating. He was kind, gentle, polite, usually well spoken (even when telling the Priests exactly how he felt about them and when driving the merchants from the temple). He loved children and respected women. As the song says, His Law is Love and His Gospel is Peace. Yet, He was subjected to the most horrific torture and painful death any of us can imagine. He committed no crime and was no danger to anyone. He preached generosity, faith, peace and love.  His death was purely political, but this also is another post for another time.

I don’t watch crucifixion reenactments, scenes in movies or even read them anymore. I’ve paid my dues, I know every mournful detail of His last three days as a mortal. I’ve spent time in Israel. I helped repair a Greek Orthodox church and school damaged by neglect and war. I’ve been to Golgotha, I’ve touched the stone believed to be the stone His body was laid upon to prepare it for burial and yes, there were dried blood stains on it. And I’ve walked the Via Dolorosa. I walked it in the heat, having to push through crowds and watch people going about their daily routine just as He did the day He walked that path.

This is the Garden of Gethsemane, where He spent his last moments as a free man.  Yet, as I stood there on a hot July day in 2000, I was remembering the man who prepared breakfast for his disciples after His resurrection. The man who said to never forbid children to come to him. A man who prevented a woman from being stoned to death. A man who restored life and hope many times, and left behind only faith, peace and love. I prefer to show my respect by humbly honoring His life. A life which continues even now. So tomorrow, I will think of His life, how He changed the world and what His heart’s desires are for all of us.

I leave you with some light, happy pictures I look at when I need to smile. Because that’s what I believe He wants from us.  My honest opinion is He is a warm, kind, friendly, loving man with a great sense of humor.

      Happy Easter

Peace

Peace, that feeling of pure calm bliss. We all want it. When I was younger I loved the old gospel hymn “Peace in the Valley.” I still like it however, I’ve decided I’m not going to wait until I cross to the spirit world to enjoy peace. So, how will the Law of Attraction help us find more peace?

Peace is like happiness, it’s inside of you. It’s a state of mind, heart, spirit. You either have it or you don’t. If you don’t, it can be created. But only you can create it for you. I began my quest for peace by looking at all the things in my life which were not bringing me peace. My list included a job that wasn’t feeding my soul, an honest lack of fun and entertainment in my life, missing my daughter and grandson, and an unhealthy diet with too little exercise added to the mix. Your list will vary greatly I’m sure.

My solution? I prioritized the list. I started with the one thing which was causing me the most angst, a job which wasn’t feeding my soul. We spend approximately one third of our lives performing some sort of work, so I personally believe this time should be spent in a manner befitting our moral values and in alinement with our spiritual compass. I’m sure there are many moral/spiritual accountants, physicians, delivery (wo)men, cashiers, and hairdressers. It’s not what you do, but whether your work is in line with your soul’s destiny. You will feel, deep in your gut, if it is or isn’t. And only you can decide if you should change careers or not. The decision was easy for me, through no fault of my own, I was laid off.

Second, I began eating healthier and getting more exercise. This is not easy because William and I have very different food preferences. So, I’m taking baby steps. Simultaneously, I’m working on bringing more fun and entertainment into my life. I’m brushing up on my chess skills (I currently am so rusty the Tin Man would feel sorry for me) and in line with the exercise, I’m waiting for the weather to break so William and I can play golf at least a couple times a month. Finally, my daughter is coordinating with me on planning more trips for us to visit together.

The Universe will sense your desires. As you take these baby steps and implement these small incremental changes in your life, your energy vibration changes, rises, and begins bringing you in line with your intention of finding peace. As your energy vibration changes, you change, your thoughts, opinions, desires and reactions to the world around you change. The Universe feels the change and changes what is sent to you. You will begin seeing spontaneous circumstances show up which bring you more comfort, calm and peace. This will set in motion a snow ball effect  wherein the more peace you feel the more peaceful circumstances will come to you. Peace like all other intentions in life is a journey, not a destination. As we navigate through life in these mortal bodies we learn and gain the feelings, the energy vibrations which ultimately carry us to our Divine Destination.

P.S. I’ve made some changes to my e-mail settings, if you have a moment, please send me a short e-mail, just saying hi, or something silly, to freefullife@gmail.com  so I can test the results.

Thanks and have a great Wednesday.

Worth

Have you ever wondered what you’re worth? I’d be surprised if you said no. I think we all go through periods in our life when we wonder if we really deserve to be here, to be alive, to take up space on this planet. The truth is not only do you, and you, and him, and her, and them all deserve to be here. You’re critical to life as we all know it. Take for example the butterfly gently flapping her wings, which starts a ripple effect in the energy field and eventually becomes a windstorm. Your energy has the same effect on the world around us.

You get up this morning, you don’t feel well. Money is tight, you haven’t slept well for several nights, your boss has been very demanding lately and your dog is sick. So, you snap at your husband. Your husband is now grouchy and he goes to work and snaps at his secretary. She goes to lunch and is in such a bad mood she doesn’t leave the waitress a tip. The waitress is depending on her tips just to make her car payment. The waitress is unable to make her car payment, her car is repossessed, so now she has no transportation for work. Since his main waitress can’t get to work, the restaurant owner loses business and ends up shutting down the diner.

Rewind, You get up this morning, you don’t feel well. Money is tight, you haven’t slept well for several nights, your boss has been very demanding lately and your dog is sick. You stop, take a deep breath and remind yourself how much you love your husband. You give him an extra hug and kiss and tell him how much you love him.  Your husband takes danishes for the office staff. His secretary didn’t have breakfast so the danish is a treat. At lunch she’s feeling so good, she doubles the tip she normally leaves for the waitress. The waitress is able to make her car payment. She decides to take an extra shift every week at the diner. Business improves and the diner hires the secretary’s firm for advertising. So your husband lands a big account and money is not so tight.

This may seem a bit extreme, but every person’s energy affects every other person’s energy. What if you suddenly weren’t here? Your absence would create a hole in the energy field which would be felt by people who don’t even know you. Recall, in the paragraph above how your actions set off a chain reaction affecting a waitress you never even met. We all have worth and value beyond what we can see or feel. So when you start to have doubts about your worth, have faith. Faith is not belief without prove, its trust without reservation.

Have a great weekend.

Happy Ostara a.k.a Spring

Technically, spring doesn’t start until tonight. From dusk this evening to dusk tomorrow evening, light and dark will be equal and balanced.  For the Druids and Celts this is a lesser day of celebration. The Vernal Equinox or Ostara is a time of planting seeds, of awakening and of longer, warmer days ahead. It is a celebration of newness and an appreciation of nature in her infinite wisdom.

One of my favorite songs is “The Rose.” A line from the song: “in the winter, far beneath the bitter snow, lies a seed that with the sun’s love, in the spring becomes the rose.” We all plant seeds, some bear the fruit and flowers of our hearts desire, some don’t. What we reap depends in part on the ‘seed’ we plant. However, the most beautiful seed will not blossom if it is not properly nourished. If we plant a seed of love and then water it with anger and feed it with impatience and condemnation, what grows is some mutant which we can’t handle and in truth, probably don’t want. Likewise if we water it with encouragement and feed it with patience and acceptance what grows is an eternal love which adds beauty to the world and inspires all that gaze upon it.

As you can see, Freedom to a Full Life is undergoing a make-over. New blog topics will include diet tips, recipes, ideas and encouragement for smoking cessation, fashion and beauty news, and more serious issues such as domestic violence, delinquent children, homelessness, drug addiction, and the ever growing poverty world wide.  Please take a few moments to explore the pages of my blog. I’ve given them all a fresh coat of paint and feel free to leave a comment to tell me what you think.

Thanks and have a great day!

Irish Myths

I want to preface this post by saying what I’m sharing here may not be grounded in fact. There are as many versions of these stories as there are characters for each story. This is just some fun to start an early St Paddy’s Day weekend.

The Banshee: often seen as an old woman, her scream is said to bring death to anyone who hears it. There is one version of this story which says she is attracted to people in extreme grief. The death her screams bring is supposed to relieve the grief. It’s also thought if you survive her screams, you will become a banshee.

Pookas: Mischievous fairies. They love wrecking havoc especially in the countryside.

Changelings: Baby fairies swapped for human babies. Changelings are thought to only be happy if there is chaos and sadness in the home where they’re left.

Dagda’s Harp: a magical harp which when played can emit the Music of Tears, making everyone who hears it cry, Music of Mirth, making everyone laugh or the Music of Sleep making everyone fall into a deep slumber.

Childred of Lir: Lir is the Lord of the Sea. His children were changed into swans by their jealous stepmother. They could only be changed back if they heard the chime of a Christian Bell. They are reported to have been swans for around 900 years until St. Patrick brought a Christian Bell to Ireland.

St. Patrick: He’s reported to have driven all the snakes from Ireland. Which wasn’t hard, since there weren’t any snakes in Ireland.

The Shamrock: The Druids believe it wards off evil. The Celts believe it has mystical powers, and they believe the number 3 is sacred. And the Christians believe it represents the Holy Trinity.

Finn MacCool:  a warrior who in ancient times caught a salmon which possessed all knowledge. While cooking the salmon hot juice spilled on his thumb. While sucking his burnt thumb, he was imparted with the knowledge of the salmon. So, whenever he needed to know something, he sucked his thumb for knowledge.

Fairies: Shape shifting creatures, who can take any form but for some reason like the human form. They often appear as beautiful and irresistible, however, contrary to most fairy tales, they are not usually kind or friendly.

Leprechauns: Very tall fairies. They usually appear as an old man. They collect gold and hide it in pots at the ends of rainbows. It’s said they travel on rainbows and if you’re lucky enough to catch one, he has to grant you three wishes before he is allowed to leave you.

Like I said these are myths and there are many versions of these stories. Here’s some nice Celtic music to start putting you in the mood to honor the Irish!!!

St. Patrick

There are many myths surrounding this now Sainted man. However, many don’t know the basics of his life. So, today I’ll shed a little light.

He was born in Wales. When he was sixteen he was kidnapped by the Irish army and taken to Ireland where he lived as a slave for six years. He then escaped and returned to Wales where he later became a Bishop in the church. He eventually returned to Ireland as a missionary. It is widely accepted that he lived and served the Irish people from about 428 A.D. to his death sometime between 440 and 460 A.D. March 17 is believed to be the date of his death and therefore the day we celebrate in his honor.

St. Patrick is responsible for integrating the so called Pagan believes of Ireland with Christian beliefs. He helped the Irish people see the correlation between worship of Jesus with their beliefs of celebrating seasons, moon phases and the earth and her inhabitants. Two notable examples are St Patrick placed a symbol of the sun on the Christian cross which today is known as the Celtic Cross and he used bonfires on High Holy Christian holidays such as Easter because the Irish were accustomed to using bonfires for their seasonal celebrations.

What this man really taught is that the so called Pagan believes are simply part of the big picture created by God. God created Jesus. Jesus taught respect, generosity, and love. God also created the sun, moon, stars, earth, seasons, animals, plants and He, Jesus and all other Spirits are Honored and pleased when we treat these creations with respect, generosity and love.
